A week in the U.S.
CLOUDSPINNERThis is the cover page for the Improvised book, "Cloudspinner". The primary image is one which I conceived many years ago while living in the Windermere Valley and looking up at the enormous mountains which surrounded us. I imagined that there were beautiful beings who lived at the top of the world who spun the clouds which fuelled my imagination.
Dedication Page"The pages of this book, like you, change with the light."This book is dedicated to Dave Horak and Bridget Ryan. It was begun in Calgary, Alberta in February of 2018. Each page is 9"x12" and painted with Acrylic. I have added iridescent colours which bounce light around and give the impression of depth and glow. This effect is not terribly well captured in the photographs here, but you get the idea...
3.The Cloudspinner ConjuresShe gathers the energy of the earth and spins the clouds that fuel our imaginations. I had imagined that the Cloudspinner was a beautiful woman - a Gaia figure - in tune with the earth and the sky, the water, the air. There is no judgement in what she spins, only joy and wonder.
4.Conjuring to the skyShe sends her love into the world.The model for this picture came to pose for me on Toronto Island, Valentine's day, 2017. It was the first time I'd ever paid someone to expressly model and it was a big day for me as an artist. A step in some direction, you might say.
5.Surrounded by the LightShe moves in brightness
6.Into the WorldThe Clouds are reflected in the world.This was painted in Whitefish, Montana where I spent a couple of weeks following the run of "undercover" at Vertigo Theatre in Calgary. There was great peace in this place.
7.Gathering StormThe earth is reflected in the clouds.I wanted to contrast the painting before this one - something darker and more ominous. The contrast of Paynes Grey in the sky with the Naples Yellow on the horizon seemed ludicrous to me, but somehow it works.
8... and all is beautyThe earth reflected in water.I began with Turquoise and went from there. A this point I wondered: am I the cloudspinner?
9.From Golden HighsA crystal descent into the valley...Inspired by the drive through the mountains of B.C. and into Osoyoos. From blizzard conditions to desert floor in a blink. I raced through the composition so I could get to the addition of GoldFinger (an oil-based golden paint which stinks but is fun to apply).It shimmers and shines
10.She is full of Light and BeautyOn the days when joy over-flows, it's best to dance

13.Measuring the MiseryMy Uncle described the process of healing as a measurement of progress. Every inch is recorded, and every tear is discussed.

17.Mount PleasantIn this attic room, the Cloudspinner works. It looks out over the neighbourhood and is situated high above the street. Just in the trees where the crows can see.
